The Sunday football campaign started in earnest this morning with the big kick-off for most divisions of the VB Trophies Cambridge Sunday Football League.
A light sprinkling of rain on an otherwise sunny morning made for the perfect setting for football across the county but with the start of Division 2B not until next Sunday Sporting Hinton were not in action. One disappointment of an otherwise exciting morning was an opening day unfulfilled fixture between Little Downham United and league new-comers Wilburton, the home side failing to field a team so early in the season a worrying sign.
Other than this 17 other fixtures did take place across the divisions starting with two Senior Division fixtures, Fulbourn Sports Sunday enjoyed their debut top division season with a 2-1 win away from home against Exning United. In the other match Senior Division stalwarts, and Hinton’s Whitelamp League Cup opponents, Barnwell Rangers enjoyed a 4-2 win at Sawston Recreation Ground against last season’s runners-up Sawston Keys.
It was goals galore in Division 1A as Chippenham opened the season in emphatic style with a 14-2 home win against Trumpington Tornadoes, whilst N.C.I. enjoyed a 5-2 home win against Newmarket Town Sunday at Manor Community College.
A full complement of fixtures took place in Division 1B, Fowlmere Metals starting the season in style picking up three points away from home against newly promoted Fulbourn Sports Sunday Reserves. Sawston Wanderers made the short trip to Fulbourn to face Fulbourn Rovers only to return on the end of a 4-1 thumping, relegated Ickleton started life in a lower division winning a seven goal thriller against promoted side Edward Jolly Boys thanks to a 4-3 away win at Guilden Morden Recreation Ground. There were also wins for Linton Aztecs and Drayton Lions against Cambridge Fire & Rescue and Cambridge Cosmos Respectively.
Down in Division 2A Waggon & Horses sent out a message to the rest of the division winning 6-0 against Studlands Park, in fact it was a good day for all the promoted sides with Oakington Vikings recording a 4-3 home win against Ely Park Rangers 3G and Newmarket Cherry Tree, who recorded a 3-1 win against Exning United Reserves.
There were also a lot of goals in the bottom divisions, starting with Division 3A where Prince of Wales Newmarket kicked off at home with an impressive 6-1 result against Walpole Warriors Sports. Whilst at Bottisham Village College our former reserve team, now named Cambridge Fans United, kicked off their first campaign in the VB Trophies Cambridge Sunday Football League with a 6-0 defeat against fellow new side Ree United.
Finally in Division 3B Barley started the season in better form than last season, this time last year they were on the end of a 17-1 defeat to Sporting Hinton, today however they picked up a point thanks to 1-1 draw at home to Banyers. Gransden kicked off the campaign with a 3-1 home win against the Plough and Sawston Athletic recorded the same scoreline against Elmdon. |
